My Summer Haven

If you are from western Michigan, you will know that there are several beach towns Lake Michigan. Since I live fairly close to Lake Michigan, I have grown up traveling to the lake for long weekends with my friends at their cottages. There are so many destinations to choose from, I however am in love with South Haven. It is a small, quaint lakeside town filled with friendly people. The streets have a ton of adorable boutiques that will make you want to splurge this month's savings. I have found some of my favorite dresses and jewelry in these stores. They also have cute decorations and signs for your home or dorm. Along with boutiques, there are a handful of yummy restaurants scattered throughout the town. We love trying out different places every time we stop by.

The beaches are packed with tourists every weekend. However, we tend to go to small public beaches away from the crowd. The water is occasionally a bit chilly, but this is Michigan we're talking about.  The crowds here aren't as bad as the crowds in Grand Haven, Ludington, or Charlevoix. Our friends have a boat, so we take it every night to watch the sunset and take a quick dip. Summer is the best time of the year to visit, it is the perfect weather and there is the blueberry festival (South Haven's biggest and only festival of the year). is tons to do and beautiful beaches left and right! This is the town to be in if you're looking for a summer getaway.

5SOS Outfit + Concert

I'm finally settled into my new dorm which I am in love with. We have super high ceilings, five massive windows, and lots of storage. I'll post some photos of our dorm once we get everything completely organized.

Last week, a friend of mine texted me asking if I would join her for the 5 Seconds of Summer concert in Detroit.... Free of charge. Of course, I said yes. I threw together an outfit quickly and I was out the door. I wore a gray baggy crop-top with denim overalls and a pair of black high-top converse. I may have looked like a four year old boy, but I loved every second I spent in those overalls.

This concert was so different from any other concert I've been to. It was so loud and exciting. The boys sounded so good and we spent the night dancing and singing to all of their songs. The arena was an awesome atmosphere; everyone was having a good time and enjoying the show. It was definitely worth the two hour car ride.

Round Two

Sophomore year.

Today is my last day home before I leave for college. As much as I love this town and all the people in it, I need to get out of here. I cannot wait to be back with my smick squad. We know each other better than we know ourselves. Nothing is over-dramatized and everything revolves around food. I have never met a group of people who were so similar to me. These girls are my home away from home and I cannot wait to reconnect with them after this hellish summer.

As much as I say I want to go back to school, pangs of sadness take over my body with each goodbye. Memories of this summer flash through my head every time I think of leaving this place. The comforting bed adorned with my cat snuggled in the covers, the adventures to the lake for a night  getaway, and the runs down Ada drive with the sun beaming down on me as I trot along the winding road.

This summer I learned that no one is as strong as they seem. Not even myself. We ride in the car with the windows down, screaming the lyrics to some song about love. We scream. I would like to say we scream with smiles on our faces and sun in our hair. The truth is, we scream because it makes us feel free. We scream because the real world is a dark and dooming place. We scream because we are numb. We scream because we put on a strong face for too long and eventually we crack. Eventually, we scream. We all just scream.

So here I am. Waiting. Waiting to leave this place and hating myself for it. I love it here, yet I hate it here. The comfort of home is almost too much, making it hard to want to leave. A bittersweet nausea that churns in my stomach every time I think of saying goodbye to my family. Nothing can prepare a girl and her mother when they finally say goodbye to one another. It is and always will be the hardest thing I ever have to do. With a tight throat and watery eyes I say, "I'm fine, I love you." However, she knows. She knows I'm not saying much because I'll cry if I say any more. I'll cry once she's gone and she'll cry on the drive home. And we'll talk for a half hour on the phone later that night about anything to get our minds off the fact that we are no longer together.

So, tomorrow should be interesting to say the least. I hope this post wasn't too morbid. I'm quite excited to move in, but I think some of you can agree with me that leaving home is bittersweet.

The next few posts will most likely be college or dorm related, so look out for those!

Thanks for reading.

New Americana

Do you ever listen to the same artist over and over again until you know all of their songs by heart?

Summer Sales

Before heading back to school, I have taken it upon myself to find as many deals as I can. My urban outfitters cart has been piling up for weeks, so when I saw that there was free shipping I immediately got my debit card. Most of the things in my basket were on sale to begin with. I ordered a pair of romper overalls and I absolutely adore them. I can wear a little cropped tank or t-shirt underneath it and the outfit it complete. It's a really simple outfit. I also got a little blue/grey washed cropped tank trimmed with little aztec patterns. I will probably pair this tank with a pair of high-waisted jean shorts for a casual going-out look. The final thing I've been dying to get my hands on are a pair of high-top converse. I love love love these shoes. They are easy to wear with dresses, shorts/shirts, and even leggings. I know these shoes will be my go-to once I get back to school!

I also did a little digging around the Target cosmetics section and discovered how much I love cheap make-up for eyes and lips. I fell head over heels for this eyeshadow stick from Rimmel. It's super easy to use and stays on my eyelids all day long. Elf is the other brand which is known for it's cheap prices. I picked up the smudge pot in a coffee color. This pot is super pigmented and definitely makes my eyes pop! It only costs like $3 which is a major steal. Finally, I grabbed some lip stain by Elf- just to try it out! I love how natural this makes my lips look while still adding a bit of rosiness to them.

All in all, I love all these products and pieces. I wish I could buy more, but sadly my bank account is suffering. Be sure to check out the sales at urban this month if you haven't yet!

Hope you're all having a wonderful day!

Charcoal For Your Face?

Blackheads? Yes. Everyone struggles with their skin at some point in their lives. Right now, I am constantly battling the black spots dotted across my nose. No matter how much I exfoliate, squeeze, and rub, they never seem to disappear. UNTIL... Charcoal soap. I'm not going to lie, it did take a few days for this to kick in. Don't let the color fool you, this bar of soap can do wonders to your skin. It gets rid of all the gunk in my pores and leaves my face feeling fresh and clean. It also heals impurities and detoxifies your skin. This product can be used on your face or your body. I would definitely recommend looking into charcoal soap if you are looking for a new way to battle impurities on your skin.

Check out this soap- you won't regret it!

My First Time Hiking

For years I have watched my older brother leave home for a long weekend up north. Hiking is one of his favorite things to do and this summer I finally gave in. I agreed to travel two hours north to Manistee National Forest with my brothers (Cam & Casey) for a one-nighter.

It started out early Monday morning with a big breakfast and excited eyes. Our overprotective mother forced us to bring ridiculous things such as pepper spray (as if they would save us from a bear attack LOL bless her). The ride up was filled with talk of the future and what to expect on the trail. Here was the plan: seven miles the first day, spend the night in a campsite, and wake up early for another seven miles the second day. It seemed pretty doable. All of us are very athletic and seven miles a day didn't seem too rigorous. Our spirits were high as we set off for our first ever trip together.

We got on the trail around 11 o'clock. Hill after hill, we ventured further into the wild. As time went on, one of my brothers would fart or hold a branch back only to let go and whack me in the face with it. What lovely brothers I have. We spoke from time to time, but most of the time we walked in silence as we hiked further into this beautiful park. I took in everything in front of me: the roots from the trees that had transformed into steps, the blue markers placed on the trees as we passed, and gorgeous views we came acrossed from the highest peaks of the park. I was having a great time taking photos, spending time with my brothers, and experiencing something completely new.

Four hours later we arrived to our campsite and set up the tent and a few hammocks. After relaxing for an hour or so, we decided to take a swim. Using sticks, we prodded in front of us to keep clear from swimming into big rocks. It was surprising warm (for a river in northern Michigan) and refreshing after our hike. Once we got back, dinner was the only thing on our minds. We decided to start the fire (here's were it gets a bit tricky). The night before we had a massive lightning storm and the fire pit was drenched. With just one fire-starter handy, the fire died almost instantly. Frustration was plastered on my brother's face as he tried time after time to build a fire with just a lighter. Soon, he decided to take a break because he was too upset and wasn't thinking clearly. As he left the campsite, I remember the toilet roll I packed in case of a #2. After unrolling the toilet paper from the roll, I lit the cardboard roll on fire. And what do you know? A flame. A very large flame emerged. With that, the fire started and I was thanking God I didn't have to eat cold soup for dinner.

After devouring our soups, we sprawled out on our hammocks and mattress pads around the fire. Conversation and laughter filled the cool night air as the sun set behind the tall pines. We talked about everything and I mean everything. Topics ranged from the complexity of the vagina to the type of cat Cam plans on adopting next year. As the sun faded and darkness took over the night, I couldn't help but feel a bit scared. We climbed into our tent and eventually I drifted off to sleep despite the loud critters frolicking around at night.

We woke at 6 a.m. Despite our tired eyes and aching bodies, we hauled ourselves out of our sleeping bags. This morning was a bit rough for me, I was aching in places I didn't know could ache and I hadn't had a shower in about two days. My hair was a mess, but we still took a picture before leaving to capture this amazing adventure. We hauled the second day. It only took us two hours to finish the seven mile hike and I couldn't be more excited for the Applebee's we were planning on getting on the ride home. Although I was exhausted after this hike, I know I could've gone further and longer. I love how close I felt to nature and how free I felt from my phone and the internet. It allowed me to realize what really matters and how much I'm going to miss my brothers this year as we all separate. I'm so happy we did this trip and I can't wait to go on another adventure next year!

Here are a butt-load of photos I took----

I hope you enjoyed reading and scrolling through these photos from our trip!
